AA (diesel locomotive)

Description

The locomotive was built on Kaluga Machine-building Plant at the end of 1933. The diesel locomotive was intended for shunting work, as well as for driving suburban trains. It was equipped with a 6-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the 6D22/28 type, which developed a power of 300 hp at a speed of 650 rpm. The design and construction of this engine was carried out with the advice of a professor Gakkel Ya. M. - developer of the first Soviet diesel locomotive Shchel 1 This is reflected in many elements of the new diesel locomotive. So, its fans and refrigerator had a design similar to the similar equipment of the Gakkel diesel locomotive. The torque from the diesel shaft was transmitted through a mechanical transmission to the jack shaft, and then, through the mates, to the driving wheel pairs. In total, the gearbox had 4 stages, while at the maximum stage the locomotive could reach speeds of up to 51 km/h. A special feature of the locomotive was that a number of elements (brakes, axleboxes, spring suspension) of the O V steam locomotive were used in its design.. According to the designers, this should have made it easier to repair.

The locomotive made only a few experimental trips, during which a number of engine defects were discovered. For this reason, the AA diesel locomotive never entered service.
