Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (abr. Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences; ARAN) is a research institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The oldest academic scientific archive in Russia. It was founded in 1728 inSt. Petersburg for storing documents of the Conference (General Meeting) St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In 1963, the status of the main archival institution was established Academy of Sciences received the archive department in Moscow.

The archive was founded on January 6 (17), 1728 to store documents of the General Assembly and the Chancellery Academy of Sciences.
According to the Charter of the Academy of Sciences of 1747, the management of the archive was ex officio assigned to the Conference Secretary of the Academy of Sciences.
Since 1912, a special position of head of the archive was established.

Current state
Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences connects the functions of the largest in the Russia's repository of scientific documentation, the main archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Research Institute. The Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences provides formation and preservation of the Archive Fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences; scientific description and development of archive funds; providing institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and various users with retrospective information of important scientific and socio-cultural significance; scientific development of problems of the history of the Academy of Sciences and Science, archivology, archeography, source studies, restoration and conservation of documents of the Archive Fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In accordance with the Regulations on the Archive Fund of the Russian Federation approved by the Government of the Russian Federation.By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 552 of March 17 , 1994, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences issued Resolution No. 125 of June 21, 1994" On Approval of Normative Acts on the improvement of Archival affairs in the Russian Academy of Sciences", which approved the Regulations on the Archival Fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the Regulations, the Archive Fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a collection of documents generated in the activities of the Russian Academy of Sciences, its institutions, organizations and enterprises of scientific, socio-cultural and historical significance. Documents of the Archive Fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences are an integral part of the Archive Fund of the Russian Federation. In accordance with applicable law and the Charter of the Russian Academy of Sciences: "the Russian Academy of Sciences holds manuscripts of scientists, writers, art and culture, and archival materials of the institutions of RAS and other materials of historical value, in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the archives of scientific institutions of the Academy, in the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, not surrendering them to the national repository."
In April 2019, the activities of the RAS Archive were actually suspended, and it was on the verge of liquidation[4]. Since April 8, 2019, the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as its branch in St. Petersburg, have been closed "indefinitely"[5]. On June 19, 2019, the reading room of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences resumed its work[6]. Since November 1, 2019, the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been closed due to preparations for moving to a new building. In December 2020, the new Archive building of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, worth 2,566 million rubles, was put into operation.

The archive fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located in more than 40 archive institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition to the RAS Archive in Moscow and its branch in St. Petersburg, the academic archive network is represented by scientific archives of branches and centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and scientific and industry archives of institutions-Research Institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which have the right to permanently store documents.
