Northern State Medical University
Northern State Medical University is a Russian higher education institution. It was founded in 1932 by a decree of Council of People's Commissars on the establishment of the Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute as a training base for healthcare professionals in the European North of Russia.
In 1935, ASMI created the Department of Physical Culture and Medical Rehabilitation, headed by Professor G. I. Krasnoselsky.
In 1994, ASMI was transformed into the Arkhangelsk State Medical Academy (ASMA); in 2000, ASMA, in turn, became the Northern State Medical University (SSMU).
From 1993 to 2012, he was the rector of SSMU, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Pavel Ivanovich Sidorov.
Since April 17 , 2014, the Rector of SSMU is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Lyubov Nikolaevna Gorbatova.

Activity
Northern State Medical University plays a leading role in the implementation of regional policy in the field of medical education and science. The university trains personnel for the Arctic region of Russia. As part of the social partnership, cooperation agreements were signed with the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region, the administration of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Ministries of Health of the Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Kaliningrad, Novgorod regions, the Republics of Karelia and Komi, and the Department of Health of the Vologda Region.
In addition to training young personnel, the university actively implements continuing professional education and implements additional education programs using innovative methods, including e-learning, distance learning and simulation technologies.
The university is actively implementing a system of continuing medical education with the use of modern educational technologies: simulation training, internships, distance education. In 2016, the Center for Accreditation and Simulation Education was established.
One of the key tasks of the university's development is the integration of education, science and practical healthcare. In order to carry out fundamental and applied scientific research and implement its results in practical healthcare, the University has established a small innovative enterprise. A special feature of the university's research areas are developments in the use of bioresources of the North.
In 2019, SSMU entered the top 100 Russian universities according to Forbes. SSMU entered the top five Russian medical universities according to the July 2019 issue of the world university ranking Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. The scientific journal "Human Ecology", published by the University, is included in the list of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications approved by the Higher Attestation Commission, and is also included in the international Scopus database.
Today, SSMU has all the prerequisites for joining global network collaborations aimed at solving issues facing modern education, science, and practical healthcare.
Since 2005, the university operates Museum of the History of Medicine of the European North.
Teaching staff
Today, the university employs brilliant specialists, professionals in their field – 485 teachers and researchers, 86 of them are doctors of science and professors, 10 people have a foreign doctoral degree (PhD).

Scientific research is conducted in the following key areas::
health monitoring and disease prevention for residents of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation;
medical and psychological aspects of ensuring security in the Arctic;

SSMU is a research and educational center for the development and implementation of projects in the field of health and social work in the Arctic and the Barents Euro-Arctic region;
150 international scientific and educational projects have been implemented;
SSMU has an International School of Public Health, accepted as a member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER);
28 existing bilateral agreements with universities, RECs, clinics from 11 countries;
SSMU graduates have defended more than 50 Phd theses abroad.
The scientific journal "Human Ecology", published by the University, is included in the list of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals. Every year, the university hosts more than 30 scientific, practical and methodological conferences and seminars, including more than 20 international ones.
SSMU has several well-established algorithms for creating branches of research centers. For example, the northern research centers of the Northwestern Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the branch of the Hematology Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Research Institute of Arctic Medicine, and the Research Institute of Marine Medicine.
Students
The number of students and trainees is more than 10 thousand, including about 5 thousand students, including more than a thousand foreign students from 15 countries.
